Nelson blood drive brings in good results

LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge senior Derek Nelson recently earned a $250 scholarship after organizing a LifeServe Blood Center scholarship blood drive in Laurel, LifeServe said in a news release.

LifeServe said it offers scholarships to students who coordinate blood drives during its summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day) or winter (December and January) scholarship periods. According to the blood center, students are eligible for a $250 scholarship if they recruit and register at least 25 donors, and a $500 scholarship if they register at least 40 donors.

LifeServe said Nelson served as chairperson for the Laurel drive held Tuesday, Jan. 6.

According to LifeServe, 27 donors registered for the blood drive and 28 units of blood were collected. LifeServe said those donations could potentially help save up to 84 lives.

LifeServe said five people donated blood for the first time at the Jan. 6 drive.

LifeServe also recognized donors who reached gallon milestones at the Laurel blood drive: Benjamin Galvin (seven gallons), Kimberly Jensen Dietrich (eight gallons) and Lois Urwiler (nine gallons), according to the release.

The next Laurel Community Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, at the Laurel Fire and Rescue Hall from 2-6 p.m., LifeServe said. To schedule an appointment, LifeServe encouraged donors to text “LIFESERVE” to 999-777.

Those interested in volunteering, sponsoring a blood drive or learning more about scholarship opportunities may contact Kim Jensen Dietrich at (712) 212-5016 or kim.jensendietrich@ lifeservebloodcenter.org LifeServe Blood Center is a nonprofit community-based blood center that has served local hospitals and patients since 1947, according to the release.
