Vets form VFW Post; Carl Samelson elected Commander

Jan. 10, 1946

HARTINGTON —Approximately fifty overseas veterans of World War II gathered at Lloyd’s cafe January 3 to form a post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hartington. The first part of the meeting was given over to business connected with the organization of the post. At the completion of this business, those present were signed up as members of the national organization and an election of officers was held.

Carl Samelson was elected commander; Dwain Lentz, senior vice commander; James Sudbeck, junior vice commander; Bennie Johnson, chaplain; and Vernie Meyer, quartermaster. Merton Olson was appointed adjutant.

A. R. Andrews, district commander from Norfolk, and Mr. Helms and Mr. Hood, from the state department of the V. F. W., were present to assist in organizing the local post. This is the first V. F. W. post to be formed in Hartington.

Regular meetings will be held the first and third Monday of each month, the next meeting to be held Jan. 21.

Jan. 10, 1946

CONSTANCE—Mr. and Mrs. Joseph G. Schieffer of Constance received word from the war department that their son, Arthur, previously listed as missing, was drowned while serving with the army on Guam Island, December 17, 1945.

Schieffer, 23, was a native of Constance and had resided there until his entry into the armed forces about a year ago. He had been overseas several months. Prior to his induction he had been engaged in farming with his father.

In addition to his parents, Schieffer is survived by one brother, Sylvester, and four sisters, Irene, Angela, Jeanette, and Lucille, all of Constance.

A memorial service will be held at St Joseph’s Catholic church at Constance.

Jan. 18, 1951

HARTINGTON — New officers of the Chamber of Commerce took over their official duties at the meeting held Monday at the Cedar Cafe.

P.F. Hahn, who served as president last year, opened the meeting and after completing all old business, turned the meeting over to new Chamber President Vernon Nelson.

Other officers to begin the 1951 term were: Glen E. Bunnell, vice president; J. Mike McCoy, secretary; and Frank Ferris, treasurer. According to the treasurer’s report for 1950, the group had been very active in the last year.

The organization sponsored and paid for a park and recreation program, aided the baseball team with some $1,000 in cash, sponsored and paid for Christmas decorations and a Christmas party and sponsored and paid for the annual Halloween party.

The group also helped to promote “Opportunity Days,” and staged a number of free shows.
