Cedar trio turns in impressive showing

WINSIDE — The Cedar Catholic girls wrestling team showed Saturday that quality can beat quantity, as three Lady Trojans powered their way to three titles and a fifth-place team finish at Winside.

The Lady Trojans competed with just three wrestlers at the Winside Girls Wrestling Invitational on Jan. 10 and still tied for fifth place in the 26-team field.

Cedar Catholic finished with 75 points, matching Winnebago for fifth, behind tournament champion Tekamah-Herman (132), runner-up Plainview (123.5) and third-place Pierce (113.5). Lyons-Decatur Northeast was fourth with 92.5.

While the team standings were impressive on their own, Cedar Catholic’s performance stood out even more considering the Lady Trojans entered only three athletes — and all three won individual titles.

Ashlynn Dailey captured the championship at 110 pounds, opening with a 10-0 major decision over Corey Payne of Centennial. Daily then pinned Zowie Wilke of Bancroft-Rosalie in 1:35 before closing out the title with a fall over Morgan Nincehelser of Plainview in 0:59.

At 120 pounds, Evie Freeman earned her second consecutive gold medal and did so in dominant fashion, recording three pins — all in under one minute.

Freeman pinned Adyson Poellot of Plainview in 0:59, then stuck Katelyn Mosel of Plainview in 0:30 before finishing with a fall over Isabelle Streff of Pierce in 0:45.

Morgan Kuchta rounded out Cedar Catholic’s championship trio by claiming the 140-pound title — her first tournament crown. Kuchta pinned Charley Pittet of Plainview in 3:08, then edged Megan Jones of Ainsworth 9-8 in a tight semifinal decision. She sealed the championship with a pin of LilyAnn Willing of Tekamah-Herman in 1:58.

Cedar Catholic was scheduled to compete in the Summerland Invitational on Jan. 12 before hosting Lyons-Decatur Northeast in a boys/girls dual on Jan. 15. The Lady Trojans will travel to Plainview for an invite on Jan. 17 and to Battle Creek for another invitational on Jan. 19.
