LAUREL - Coach Joel Parks cleared the bench early in the fourth quarter and sat back and watched the Bears coast to a 71-36 victory over Pierce in the first round of the Randolph Holiday Tournament.

The Laurel bunch broke the Monday night contest wide open in third frame action and easily earned the right to meet Randolph (the Cardinals edged Valentine, 46-45) in the finals Tuesday evening.

Jon Erwin led all scorers with a 19-point performance, seven of those markers coming in the third quarter offensive surge.

Also tallying in double digits for the local quintet were Brian Johnson with 14 counters and Greg Pippitt with 11 points.

The Bears turned in a respectable showing offensively, hitting 45% from the field and 77% from the line, and their defensive execution was superb.

Throughout the competition, the Laurel crew held 6’7” Bluejay Retzlaff away from the bucket — held him scoreless for three quarters and allowed him just two goals for the entire game.
