November: Old Hartington City Hall is razed

Nov. 5, 2025

HARTINGTON — A new aerial photography system used by Cedar County is speeding up work at the County Auditor’s office and also assisting other county departments to do their work.

Cedar County signed a six-year contract with Omaha-based EagleView Imagery to take aerial photos of Cedar County property to allow county officials to determine if any structural changes have been made prior to making property valuations.

The company’s planes flew through Cedar County in April to capture images throughout the county.

The digital photos were then made available to the county to analyze.

Cedar County Assessor Janelle Heikes said the new system is working well.

Heikes said if her office finds a new structure or building improvement they were unaware of, they reach out to the property owner.

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s once-proud City Hall is now a pile of rubble.

Justin Slagle, of Slagle Dirt Work and Hauling, took a modern-day sledgehammer to the structure Monday morning.

He had spent about a week preparing the building for demolition.

As the building came down, a bit of a surprise was discovered.

It appears that a mural of some sort once decorated the east wall of the Air Pro Heating and Cooling building.

The old city shop was originally constructed in the early 1900s as a livery.

LINCOLN — Steve and Tammy Wieseler found themselves in a bit of an awkward position Saturday morning.

Steve Wieseler has guided the Wynot Lady Blue Devil girls basketball team to eight state championships and five state runner-up finishes.

His wife guided the Wynot Lady Blue Devil volleyball squad to seven state tournament appearances.

They weren’t sitting on the bench or walking the sidelines Saturday, though.

No, on Saturday they were mere spectators, watching their son, Tristan, the Lady Devils first-year head coach, as he guided his team to the school’s first-ever state volleyball title.
