HARTINGTON — From subzero cold in February to near-record heat and soaking rains in early summer, 2025 delivered some of the most dramatic weather swings in recent years across Cedar County.
The most extreme cold arrived in mid-February, when temperatures plunged to −14 degrees on Feb. 18, the lowest reading of the year. That cold snap accounted for the majority of the year’s 16 subzero days, firmly establishing February as the harshest winter month despite relatively low precipitation totals.
Conditions shifted sharply in June and July, which together marked the most volatile and impactful weather of the year. June produced the year’s highest temperatures, peaking at 98 degrees on June 20 and 21, while also becoming the wettest month with 8.87 inches of precipitation. July followed closely with 8.71 inches, highlighted by the wettest single day of the year, 2.03 inches on July 7. Nearly half of the year’s total precipitation fell during those two months alone.
The prolonged heat was not limited to summer. October stood out for its late-season warmth, with temperatures reaching 89 degrees on Oct. 4, the latest 85-degree-plus day of the year, extending summerlike conditions deep into the fall.
Overall, Hartington recorded 35.69 inches of precipitation in 2025, well-distributed unevenly across the calendar, with long dry stretches punctuated by intense storm periods.
The year will be remembered less for consistency and more for its extremes — abrupt cold, sustained heat, and heavy early-summer rainfall that shaped much of the year’s agricultural and day-today impact.
