HARTINGTON — With classes out for the holiday break, the Cedar Catholic boys basketball team stayed busy, playing five games in six days and finishing the stretch with a 4-4 record.
The Trojans went 2-1 at the Northeast Nebraska Shootout, placing third after a 41-32 semifinal loss to Wayne and a 59-43 win over Pender. Cedar then dropped a 30-point decision to unbeaten Archbishop Bergan on Jan. 2 before edging South Sioux City 65-64 the following night.
Cedar built an early cushion against Pender and never let it slip. Mason Baller led the way with 23 points, including six 3-pointers, while Micah Cattau scored 10 and Will Steffen added nine.
Wayne advanced to the championship game with a defensive second half after Cedar led by four at the break. Baller finished with 12 points and Gavin Klug added nine.
Against South Sioux City, Cedar relied on balance, with Cattau scoring 15 points, Aaron Wortmann adding 12 and Baller chipping in 10 in the one-point win.
Archbishop Bergan jumped out early and cruised to remain unbeaten. Klug led Cedar with 11 points in the loss.
Cedar travels to Laurel to take on the Bears Thursday night.
