Lady ‘Cats earn a split

ATKINSON - The Hartington-Newcastle girls basketball team split a pair of games over the past week taking a loss to West Holt 65-38 on Jan. 3 and taking care of the Randolph Lady Cardinals 43-27 the night before, both games were on the road.

Against the Lady Huskies the Lady ‘Cats fell behind early and trailed by six at the end of the first quarter and West Holt added to the lead by six again in the second quarter to head to the locker room with Hartington-Newcastle behind 30-18.

HNS stayed a little closer in the third as West Holt added a bucket to the lead but the wheels kind of came off in the fourth frame for the Lady ‘Cats and they fell by the 27-point deficit.

Vayda Lippert paced the HNS offense with 21 points, Ella Eickhoff hit double digits with a dozen points.

Karissa Bruning grabbed 10 rebounds and Kloe Fischer handed out four assists.

In the win over Randolph, the Lady ‘Cats jumped on the Lady Redbirds early 10-2 after the opening eight minutes then added a bucket to the advantage at the intermission.

The second half was more of the same and Hartington- Newcastle closed out the game outscoring Randolph 25-19 in the second half.

Lippert and Eickhoff were at it again, Lippert with 15 points and Eickhoff with 10.

Eickhoff, Bruning and Nora Lange each pulled down seven rebounds.

Lippert dished out four assists and Hadley Grutsch swiped five steals.

Hartington-Newcastle was set to travel to unbeaten Bloomfield on Jan. 6 before hosting currently unbeaten Elkhorn Valley on Jan. 9. Throw in a game early next week back on the road at Archangels Catholic and the Lady Wildcats’ next three games are against opponents with a combined record of 24-2 heading into the week.
