1925: Big highway project is planned for Laurel area

Dec. 23, 1925

LAUREL - C. E. Nevin, editor of the Laurel Advocate, and his wife, will go to Honolulu to spend the winter—where there isn’t any such thing—visiting with his brother and sister who live there. The publisher of the Crofton Journal made that trip in 1898 and enjoyed a few days stay there very much, and predicts a very pleasant trip for Mr. and Mrs. Nevin.

R. R. Allison, formerly secretary of the CedarCounty Fair association, has leased the Laurel Advocate and being a first class newspaper man and a business go-getter will conduct the affairs of the office in a satisfactory manner during the year’s absence of Mr. Nevin.—Crofton Journal.

LAUREL - While in Lincoln recently, F. P. Voter had occasion to call at the state engineer’s office and in conversation with the engineer, learned that Laurel is to be on one of the United States trans-continental highways. State highway No. 1 which passes through this city has been designated as a part of the United States highway No. 20 and will be improved by the government and made into one of the finest roads in the country. This will mean a great deal to Laurel and it is up to the business interests of this community to get busy and prepare to meet this highway with open arms.

LAUREL - The bus line which has been running between O’Neill and Sioux City and which was routed through Laurel has abandoned the west end of the line for the time being at least. They now run between Randolph and Sioux City. The change was made necessary by the recent snow which slowed up the bus to such an extent that they could not make their schedule. They were late both ways into this city the fore part of the week. We have not been informed as to when the complete trip will again be made.

Dec. 23, 1925 LAUREL - The Coburn garage of this city has just installed a new painting machine which makes a new car out of an old one in less time than it takes to write this. The new machine is a compressed air proposition which sprays the paint on the car in a much more even way than can be done with a brush. A special kind of paint is used in it that dries rapidly and the machine is an exact model on a smaller scale of the machines that are used in the Ford factory for painting cars. It is a rapid process and will meet with great success in this territory. Mr. Coburn is preparing a special room at the garage where paint jobs will be handled. The room will be dust proof and fitted especially for this kind of work and will be a splendid addition to this already well equipped garage.

LAUREL - The first pavilion sale of the season will be held in this city next Saturday afternoon. Already a great deal of stuff has been listed for the sale and more is coming in all the time so it looks as though the opening sale is going to be a good one. It is not too late to enter your article for this sale. Get in touch with the auctioneers, the manager or bring in your list to this office. Read the ad in another column of this week’s Advocate and plan to come to town for this sale. Remember, the date is Saturday afternoon, December 26.

LAUREL - The Laurel Provision & Produce Co. held open house at the store room in the Nightwine building last Saturday. Many people called at the store during the day to get acquainted with the proprietor and his wife. Mrs. Ogden arrived in the city the forepart of last week and was on hand to assist in taking care of the crowd. They have a mighty pretty store and made many friends last Saturday. Coffee was served during the afternoon and it was an enjoyable event from every standpoint.
