2015: Korths show off their Christmas spirit

Dec. 23, 2015

RANDOLPH — It is time to turn on the lights and celebrate the Christmas season.

Barb and Doug Korth’s house in Randolph is decked out for Christmas from top to bottom.

The roof is all aglow with close to just under 950 lights.

The porch that wraps around two sides of the house is dressed up for the Christmas season with icicle lights. The evergreen garland wrapped around the porch railing is accented with lots of red bows.

A snowman with a black hat, red scarf around its neck and a big smile sits on the porch near the door. Two Christmas trees are close by. A second snowman with a Santa hat sits on the porch on the south side of the house.

Christmas lights around the garage doors and the bottom of the house, Christmas wreaths, lighted candles in the windows, four giant snowflakes all add to the holiday décor.

And that’s not all, the building Barb calls her husband’s garage, is also wrapped in lights and dressed up for Christmas.

“I love doing it. Christmas is my favorite time of the year,” Barb said. “My mom loved doing it. She used to decorate every year. My daughter also likes to decorate. I think we all have the same bug.”

Barb has been decorating her house for Christmas for a number of years.

When the Korth family was still living out in the country the kids would help put up the lights and decorations.

“They learned how to do a lot,” Barb said. The Korth’s moved into Randolph in January of 1996. The lights were up for the Korth family’s very first Christmas in town.

Barb’s organizational skills help make the Christmas decorating go a little easier.

“The Christmas lights are all kept in storage totes, each one is marked so I know where they go on the house. When you have so many it is hard to remember,” she said. “I start planning for it in the summer. I want the lights spread out evenly so the timers that turn the lights on and off will work better.”

Barb has taken the time to do some research on Christmas lights and decorating.

“I go to you-tube. You can learn a lot. There are so many things I could do,” she said. “The professionals and enthusiasts use the larger C9 or C7 bulbs and some of the others are going to the LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs. My lights are incandescent; they have a softer glow. I think about the residents across the street. I don’t want to create a glare for the neighbors.”

Barb uses shingle tabs for the lights on the roof line. The bulbs can be pre-inserted into the tabs while she is on the ground and then be installed on the edge of the roof. She hides the cords in the roof soffit.
