RANDOLPH — Motorists traveling Highway 20 near its junction with Highway 81 are greeted each December by a brilliant Christmas light display at the rural home of Ben and Jean Gall, a scene many have dubbed the “Gingerbread house.”
The Gall home has become a seasonal landmark, drawing families who make it an annual stop. Ben Gall said visitors have shared stories of detouring to see the lights each year, with some saying the display brings joy, comfort and hope during the holidays. Though he’s jokingly been compared to Clark Griswold of Christmas Vacation, Gall said the display is about celebrating the spirit of Christmas, not competition.
The lights are installed fresh each year, a task that takes days to complete and occasionally requires extra help. Inside, the holiday spirit continues, with Jean Gall decorating the home — including five Christmas trees — even though most visitors only see the exterior.
The Galls say the effort is worth it if it helps spread Christmas cheer to those passing by on one of Nebraska’s busiest highways.
