WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils hosted the O’Neill St. Mary Cardinals on Monday night with the visitors looking for revenge for Wynot victory in the state football finals this fall. The two teams battled on an even keel for three quarters but the Cardinals would own the fourth quarter as they pulled away for the 60-48 win.
The Cardinals would put four players in double digits lead by Gage Hedsrtam with 17 points followed right behind by Logan Brabec with 15 points. Ben Barlow and Lance Bybee also contributed 14 and 12 points to the big win.
Wynot got 12 points from Devin Brummer, 10 points from Justin Heimes and Kotner Koch just missed double figures with his nine points.
Both teams were hitting from long range to start the game. Wynot got five points from Justin Heimes and a three pointer each from Devin Brummer, Killian Steinhaus and Carter Hans. St. Mary’s countered with a pair of threes by Logan Brabec, one by Gage Hedstram and a couple of put backs by Connor Banks as Wynot clung to the 18-15 lead.
The two teams continued to trade buckets in the second quarter. The Cardinals were led by a pair of mid range baskets by Ben Barlow and Gage Hedstrom. Wynot kept pace thanks to two more baskets by Justin Heimes and treys by Devin Brummer and Kotner Koch to keep the 21-17 halftime advantage.
It was more of same in the third quarter. Logan Brabec hit twice from distance for the Cardinals and Ben Barlow dumped in a pair in the paint. Wynot got five more points from Kotner Koch and a couple of lay-ins by Devin Brummer to hang onto the 43-40 lead.
St. Mary would own the fourth quarter going on a 20-7 run. Wynot would only score two field goals and some free throws. Meanwhile St. Mary’s Ben Barlow dumped in nine points, Gage Hedstrom contributed seven points and Ben Barlow hit a three pointer as the Cardinals pulled away for the 60-48 win.
