1920: New map shows how bridge will connect roads

Dec. 23, 1920

HARTINGTON — A map has been released showing how the new bridge over the Missouri River at Yankton will be the connecting link not only between Nebraska and South Dakota, but also between Minnesota and North Dakota points on the north and Missouri points on the south.

The effort of the Burlington to secure approval of a plan for increased capitalization is believed by many to preceed an era of development in Nebraska, which may include a connection from the Great Northern at Tankton to the Burlington, thereby completing a short line route from the Twin Cities to Denver.

HARTINGTON — Austin Nelson, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Nelson, narrowly escaped losing the sight of his right eye this week as a result of a being struck by a shot of a sling shot in the hands of a playmate.

The accident occurred in the Post Office lobby. Medical attention was necessary and the boy will be compelled to keep the injured eye bandaged for several days. An epidemic of sling shots was stopped last year only after strenuous action from parents. Parents should work hard to see they don’t get a foot hold again, lest serious accidents occur.

HARTINGTON — J.W. Schroeder, in charge of the service at all of hotels owned by the North American Hotel Company, spent a few days last week with Manager L.A. Johnson of the Hartington Hotel, inspecting the local property and familiarizing himself with the local conditions.

While here, Mr. Schroeder filed a cancellation of the mortgage of $11,000 on the local property.

The North American Hotel Company recently disposed of the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha and is now concentrating its efforts on the completion of hotels in Grand Island, Kearney, Ogalla, and Scottsbluff, which were uncompleted during the war.

“The company is now in the best condition, financially, in its history,” said Mr. Schroeder, “and invitations have been received from many towns seeking the erection of new hotels. Our efforts will be confined, however, to the completion of those started and to placing our service in the very highest class.”

Mr. Schroeder expressed himself as being well pleased with conditions in Hartington and believes that the completion of the federal state aid road and the new bridge will bring increased traffic to this part of the state.
