1925: New building is planned for Cedar County News

Dec. 17, 1925

HARTINGTON — A new home for the Cedar County News will be erected on Center Street on the rear of the property occupied by Dr. J.M. Johnson and east, across the alley, from the telephone office, according to plans made by local contractor Henry Stuckenhoff. The suggested plans call for a building with a 36-foot frontage on Center Street, facing south, and a depth of 50 feet, extending full width across both lots. The building will be of hollow tile construction which will be faced with stucco. It will provide for the News an increase of about 50 percent in the floor space and will supply room for expansion long planned but which has been delayed owing to the crowded condition of the present quarters. A large basement with concrete floor will provide ample room for stock and supplies.

The work of wrecking the frame garage presently on the site was started this morning and as soon as this is completed a large force of men will be put to work to get the foundation in and the first floor laid before a storm. The work can then proceed with the workers using the basement room, which will be about 30x36 feet.

Two experts from St. Paul, Minn. will move the big press on which the News is printed, which is the largest used by any Nebraska weekly. They will require the help of several strong men and it is expected that it will require about five days to take down, move and rebuild this one machine. Other equipment can be moved more easily, although it is a very costly matter to move the complicated machinery used in the modern print shop.

The News has occupied its present building about 18 years. The building, when erected cost only $1,600, the lot being valued at $400.

A.V. Parker, former editor of the News, continued the ownership of the building after his retirement, and during the incumbency of the present publisher covering a period of 10 years.
