2020: Plans being made for new downtown brewery

Dec. 15, 2010

FORDYCE — Cedar Security Bank, Fordyce, was robbed Tuesday morning.

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the robbery at 9 a.m., Tuesday. Area schools and most area banks were all locked down as a result of the robbery.

Reports that a gun was used in the robbery could not be confirmed at press time.

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Department called the area schools and banks to inform them of the situation and advised them to take precautions.

The robbery marks the second time in just over 15 years the bank has been robbed. The Sept. 29, 1995, robbery has remained unsolved to this date.

Law enforcement set up along the major highways and a helicopter was sent up to survey the area as they searched for a white vehicle believed to have been used in the robbery.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council Monday approved two applications that will pave the way for a craft brewery to begin operating here.

The Council gave its nod of approval for both a Class L and a Class C Liquor License application for Big Hair Brewhaus.

Brett and Leigh Wiedenfeld are planning to own and operate the Big Hair Brewhaus Brewery at the old Surge Building on North Broadway Avenue.

They needed both licenses in order to brew their own beer and for on and off sale beer and liquor sales.

Brett Wiedenfeld said once the building has been remodeled it will seat up to 130 people.

Wiedenfeld, who farms part-time and serves as an ag loan officer at the Bank of Hartington, said they plan to bring a professional brewmaster, Reid Trenhaile, in from Brookings, S.D. to set up and then manage the operation.

Trenhaile, who is originally from the Wayne area and has relatives in the Wynot area, worked at Wooden Legs Brewery in Brookings for several years.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council Monday approved a building permit for a new $1.358 million County Transit building.

RaDec Construction will begin work on the 80x125 structure in the spring. The building will be constructed on part of the old Neu Cheese Plant property, which is currently owned by Pomp’s Tires.

At present, the County rents space at the Hartington City Hall to house several vehicles in the old ambulance bay. The rest of the 10-vehicle fleet is then parked on the street outside of City Hall.

Cedar County purchased 1.6 acres of land from Pomps for $50,000 earlier this fall to be used as Cedar County Transit’s new home. Site preparation and dirt work began on the project in November.

The facility will be a steel Behlen building and will feature two offices, a wash bay and stalls for 12 Cedar County Transit vans.
