ALBION — Boone Central proved to be inhospitable hosts when Cedar Catholic arrived on Dec. 5 for each squad’s seasonopener.
Cedar Catholic seemed to have the upper hand until the Cardinals made the plays in the final frame to close out a 64-52 win.
“We played hard and made a run at them in the third quarter to seize the momentum but we couldn’t hold it,” said Trojan coach Nick Haselhorst. “Credit goes to Boone for making the game-winning plays in the fourth quarter.”
Boone Central took the lead by four after the opening quarter before both teams heated up in the second eight minutes.
The Cardinals outscored the Trojans 20-18 in the second to take a 36-30 lead into the halftime break.
Cedar got defensive in the third, holding the Cards to just seven points and got the game back to a one-point deficit heading into the final stanza.
The Redbirds used a 2110 advantage over the final period and took the win.
Aaron Wortmann paced the Trojans with 14 points, Mason Baller and Will Steffen added 10 apiece.
Cedar Catholic was a little chilly shooting the ball, going 4-for-20 from beyond the 3-point line and 13-for-31 inside the arc. The Cards were 8-for-18 from deep.
The Trojans outrebounded Boone Central 30-28 led by Aaron Wortmann and Kighter Wortmann with five each.
Jared Rutar and Steffen pulled down four rebounds each on the night.
Cedar Catholic will bring in O’Neill Dec. 12 for its home opener.
