LAUREL - A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered in Laurel Saturday afternoon to hear Governor R. L. Cochran and other speakers and to witness the ceremonies in the dedication of the new paving on Highway No. 20 through this city.
The weather man was kind in sending smiling skies for the occasion although it was wet and sloppy under foot.
The afternoon program opened shortly after three o’clock when the famous Monahan Post band of Sioux City, preceded by the colors of the American Legion post of this city, escorted the governor and speakers to the scene of the program at the west end of main street where Mayor Dr.
R. P. Carroll gave the address of welcome and presented the Hon.
W. H. O Gara who introduced the various speakers.
Besides Governor Cochran, state engineer Tilley, district engineer Martin and project engineer M. S.
Dodd were introduced and spoke briefly.
Others on the program were Mayor Hayes of Sioux City and Chas. Peasinger of Randolph representing Highway No. 20 Assn.
At the close of the speaking Gov. Cochran and little Alice Jean Wickett proceeded with the dedication of the highway, Alice Jean cutting the ribbons while the governor pronounced the hope that the highway would be used safely and sanely for the good of humanity.
The banquet in the evening was served at the Catholic church by the ladies of the church. It was largely attended by business men of the city and delegations from towns along the highway.
