Lady Bears fired up for new season

LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears return plenty of talent from last season’s team which finished 12-12 and welcomed a new head coach in Blake Brown, the former Wakefield standout who recently graduated from Morningside University.

Four juniors and a couple of seniors return from last season’s edition of the Lady Bears led by junior Rena Rasmussen who averaged just under 20 points per game as a sophomore and should hit the 1,000-point plateau in the early part of the season.

Joining Rasmussen with some offensive fire power will be classmate Kaida Eriksen who averaged 13.2 points per game last season and canned 67 3-pointers.

Juniors Hattie McCorkindale and Carly Kvols and seniors Tyler Recob and Karli Ferris also return with plenty of varsity experience.

Boston Brown, who transferred in from Wakefield, should offer some immediate help for the Lady Bears. The junior will be joined by four freshmen who will be playing their first varsity season on the court.

Willa Roberts, Nova Specht, Kloie Ferris and Ruby Jonas will be playing their first high school season on the hardwood.

The Lady Bear schedule will provide plenty of challenges as they open with perennial C2 power Crofton at home on Dec. 5. Games with West Holt, Homer, Tri County Northeast, Ponca and Plainview fill out the rest of the pre-holiday schedule.

The always tough Northeast Nebraska Shootout will follow the moratorium and Archbishop Bergan comes to Laurel to ring in the New Year on Jan. 2.

Elkhorn Valley, Cedar Catholic, Wayne and Battle Creek highlight the rest of January and the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Tournament will open up in February.

A trip to Wisner to take on the Wisner-Pilger Lady Gators will end the regular season slate on Feb. 12.
