WYNOT - Longtime Wynot head coach Steve Wieseler found himself with too much time on his hands at the beginning of March last year.
He usually has plenty to do as his Lady Blue Devil basketball team makes its annual trek south to Lincoln.
His 2024-25 team dropped a district final game to end up on the outside looking in as eight other D2 teams converged on the state tourney.
It was unusual for the town of Wynot not to be involved in the festivities, but Wieseler returns the nucleus of a team that could very well give the coach something to do in early March in 2026.
Kenna Oligmueller returns after pacing the Lady Blue Devils to a state volleyball title this fall and after being named to the Lewis & Clark All-Conference team last year.
Addison Sharpe and Jaylin Geisen also return after All-Conference accolades in their junior campaigns.
Seniors Jordan Foxhoven and Haley Wieseler return after plenty of time on the court last year and juniors Taylor Pinkelman, Tiara Sudbeck and Kiera Heimes should fill in the rotation.
Four freshmen will be vying for playing time as well. Mackenzie Foxhoven, Mya Pinkelman, Vivian Stencel and Jacy Nelson will be competing for that time.
“We have a great group of kids coming back,” said Wieseler. “I’m looking forward to watching our seniors take on a leadership role. We are ready to work toward a great year and being competitive at the state level.”
Wynot will open the season on the road at Bloomfield on Dec. 4 before a home game with Winside on Dec. 5.
Highly regarded Guardian Angels Central Catholic comes to Wynot on Dec. 11 then a trip to Osmond on Dec. 12 and Homer Dec. 16.
