Walter, Wortmann looking to lead Lady Trojans this year

Walter, Wortmann looking to lead Lady Trojans this year

HARTINGTON - Senior Addison Walter and junior Anisten Wortmann are looking to lead the Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan basketball fortunes on the court this winter and try to improve on last season’s 17-12 record and third-place showing at the Class D1 Nebraska Girls Basketball Tournament.

Head coach Craig Wortmann, despite returning just two starters from last year’s squad, feels good about this year’s team and the players coming back.

“We have the two starters coming back and three bench players that didn’t start but played big minutes for us last year,” Wortmann, the coach said. “We also have some good young players coming up that will need to develop who can help us as the year goes on.”

Wortmann, the player, scored 10 points per game last season and Walter contributed just under nine points per contest.

Joining the two starters should be junior Brynn Bernecker and seniors Savannah Pick and Camryn Loecker.

The Lady Trojan trio came off of the Cedar Catholic bench last season but saw significant playing time and did well when called upon.

Cedar Catholic’s schedule will be challenging to say the least.

Games on the road in December with Boone Central, Norfolk Catholic and West Holt and home dates with O’Neill and Crofton will get the Lady Trojans to the Christmas break.

The highly competitive Wayne Holiday Tournament will close out 2025 for Cedar Catholic.

A home game with perennial powerhouse Dakota Valley out of South Dakota will ring in the New Year on Jan. 2 then a brutal run of games with Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Wynot, Pierce, St. Mary’s, Wayne and Guardian Angels will test the Lady Trojans.

A trip to Ponca and a home game with Plainview will close out January before the Mid State Tournament gets underway Jan. 31 and runs through Feb. 7.

Home dates with Elkhorn Valley and Battle Creek are slated for Feb. 10 and Feb. 12 then a trip to Summerland on Feb. 13 will close out the regular season.

Wortmann feels Guardian Angels Central Catholic, Crofton and Pierce will be three of the top conference teams.

“We bring back two high scorers from last year and if we stay healthy, we should be very competitive in Class D1,” the coach said.
