1950: Three Belden men are injured in farm accidents

Nov. 30, 1950

BELDEN — Three farm accidents were reported in this community the past week and three men were injured.

Most serious injured was Richard Fiscus, a farmer living one mile west of town. He became caught in a corn picker Sunday afternoon and he suffered a dislocated shoulder and other cuts and bruises.

He was rushed to St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City for treatment Wednesday where he underwent surgery to help correct the injury.

Saturday Gerald Fox had what might have been a serious accident when he became caught in some chains in a corn sheller. He sustained a fractured arm, but was able to free himself without further injury.

George Keiser, who lives north of town, had his foot broken in two places. The injury was caused when a wagon ran over his foot. The accident took place when the team hitched to the wagon attempted to run away.

Prospects None Too Bright for ’51 Season; Squad Lacking Height Nov. 30, 1950

RANDOLPH - Coach W. L. Norvell has 31 basketball aspirants reporting to him for cage practice at Randolph high, with the Cards due to open the season on Friday night, December 8 at Coleridge.

Prospects are none too bright for a winning aggregation from the Cards squad this year. The team is woefully short on height, with no man on the first squad over six feet, and this lack of height is a great handicap in a sport where tall boys are almost a must have in today’s version of the cage sport. Coach Norvell will also miss the high scoring of Griggs and his teammate, Stingley of last year’s aggregation.

Eight lettermen have reported, they are Eldon Wurdinger, Bob Bernet, Jim Schenck, Gerald Scott, Gene Scott, Robert Brummels, Milton Strathman, Gail Landberg, Blair Joselyn.
