RANDOLPH - Dr. S. S. Gibson, first acting commander of the Dee Wilson Post, 113 Randolph American Legion, was honored at the annual Cedar County American Legion banquet held at Belden last Thursday by being elected commander of the Cedar County Legion for the ensuing year.

RANDOLPH - Vincent Wattier ace of the Randolph high school football squad and a senior at R.H.S., was the lone “Red and White” to receive a position on the All-Northeast Nebraska football team of 1940.

RANDOLPH - According to terms of a franchise granted the Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas company by the Randolph city council last Wednesday, Nov. 8, Randolph will have natural gas in the next three years.

RANDOLPH - The first Northeast Nebraska conference gridiron championship and the first undefeated season record in six years was the possession of Coach Bill Norvell’s Randolph Cards Friday afternoon, as the game with Creighton ended on the Creighton gridiron with the Cards the 32 to 6 victors.

RANDOLPH - Norbert Lanser, farmer living west of Randolph, became the third farmer to lose his right hand in less than ten days time Thursday, when he was caught in a cornpicker.

RANDOLPH -The Sholes Line A, a farmer owned telephone company, recently completed work in rebuilding their entire line.

The work was donated by the subscribers under the direction of Joe Swanson, the secretary.

RANDOLPH — Clarence Backer, Randolph farmer, has bought the West Side Cafe from Roy Gibson.

The cafe has been operated by Mr. Gibson since he bought the business soon after returning from service in the armed forces of World War II.

Nov. 24, 1955

RANDOLPH - Ernest Hartung, Coleridge, was elected chairman of the permanent Cedar county school reorganization committee Monday afternoon at a meeting in the county courthouse. Verner Wickett of Laurel was named vice-chairman. These men and the permanent members of the board were elected from a group of 20 nominees selected by county school board officials a week previous.

The members of the board, as elected Monday, are Mrs. Fred Sherer of Coleridge, Mrs. Joy Smith of Hartington, G. E. Barks of Belden, Roy Dickey of Laurel, Keith Wickett of Belden, Orval Dowling of Randolph.

The other nominees will serve as alternates in situations of absences which may arise and they will also serve as area consultants when study of their particular areas is underway.

At this meeting, the committee decided to ask Avery Linn, of the state department, director in charge of reorganization of districts, to meet with them in the near future. It is planned to have monthly meetings.

RANDOLPH - Coach Larry Sims has begun fashioning his 1955-56 Randolph basketball squad around a nucleus of only two returning lettermen, Harry Pate and Jon Gartner.

The season opens Dec. 2 here against Laurel. Coach Sims is working with a squad of 18: seven seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, four freshmen, two eighth graders.

The roster: Harry Pate, Jon Gartner, Dean Carstens, Eldon Robinson, Alvin Meier, Jim Lee, Arnold Bauer, all seniors; Lynn Andrew, Gary Kruger, Larry Marreel, juniors; Stanley Clausen, Gary Morris, sophomores; Ronald Coulter, John Norris, Richard Sloan, Allen Lambing, freshmen; Leon Phillips, Gary Landberg, eighth graders.

Nov. 24, 1955

RANDOLPH - St. Frances opened the season Friday at Dixon by trouncing them 56-29, and also won the second team game. This was a conference contest.

The conference, which at one time had six teams, then had only five, was enlarged to eight last year, when Waterbury, Thurston and Hoskins joined. Original teams are Concord, St. Frances, Dixon, Belden and Carroll.

On the first team squad, coached by Rev. Peter Zarkauskas, are Richard Wurdinger, John Leapley, Leon Sohler, Charles Tunink, Dick Marx, Ricky Kelsch, Mickey Peterson, Clarence Wattier, Gene Gubbels, LaVerne Scott, Herman Nordhues.

St. Frances won their second game Tuesday as they outsped and outclassed the Concord five 51-38 on the Randolph court. Teamwork and cooperation, the best shown by a St. Frances team in two years of play, according to their coach, paid off in a big way as they took the win from Concord, who is usually a tough opponent. St. Frances seconds also won.

RANDOLPH — The Cedar Motel, owned and operated by Al Kuhl and Jim Kuhl, father and son, has embarked upon an expansion building program, which will add six room and other improvements. The Cedar Motel has accommodated more than 17,000 people in the last three years, including governors, mayors of large cities, senators, movie stars and many others.

RANDOLPH — Families leaving the community to reside elsewhere include Mr. and Mrs. Leo Frederick, who have rented their farm near Sholes and are going to California; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Lienemann and son have moved to Sidney where Mr. Lienemann’s brother, Gene resides; and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Backer and children moved Sunday to South Sioux City to reside. They had been living in the former Ed Meyer residence.

RANDOLPH — John Pock, Cornhusker Cafe and bakery proprietor, will serve as president of the Randolph Community Club for the ensuing year.

RANDOLPH — Coming farm sales include Mrs. A.C. Williams, Nov. 21 at the farm south and east of Sholes, offering old and new corn, hay and grain and household goods; Jake Lackas, Dec. 1 at the farm northwest of Randolph, offering fall pigs, corn, farm, machinery and miscellaneous.

RANDOLPH — Connie Lienemann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Lienemann, left Tuesday by plane from Omaha for New York City where she will be employed by Western Union. She recently completed a course at Omaha Personnel Training School.

RANDOLPH —Coach Neil Kluver announced his starting lineup for the basketball opener on Friday, Orlin Jones, Marvin Stueckrath, Bill Martindale, Gary Rosenbach and Rod Jones. Stueckrath a senior and Rosenbach, a sophomore are returning lettermen.
