HARTINGTON — Hartington’s biggest and brightest celebration of the year is set to take place here Friday.
Some of the luster has worn off the annual Candlelight Christmas celebration, though, because of COVID 19 concerns.
This year’s event will not feature the typical business open houses. Santa will not be available to meet with area kids and go over their Christmas wish lists. The Knights of Columbus will not be hosting its usual soup supper fundraiser.
Another mainstay, a pop-up store from Main Street Jewelers, Plattsmouth, will also miss this year’s Candlelight Christmas event because of of concerns with the pandemic.
This year’s parade will be different, too. Event organizers are discouraging crowds. Area residents are urged to back their vehicles into parking spots along the parade route in order to view the parade and still maintain proper social distancing.
The parade will once again start at the schools and work its way north up Broadway. However, the parade will turn east at the Cedar County News corner and then head down east Main Street.
The new route was put in place in an effort to provide more parking spots for people to spread out and view the parade, said Hartington Chamber of Commerce President Karma Schulte.
