Eight Wildcats earn postseason football honors

HARTINGTON - Eight Hartington-Newcastle football players were named on the D1-3 All-District First Team and honorable mention lists voted on by the district coaches recently.

Two seniors, Ashton Wakeley and Mason Krause and two juniors, Austin Sudbeck and Jason Heimes were named to the first team.

Wakeley was a menace on the defensive line for the ‘Cats and head coach Rusty Fuller.

He ended his final season as a Wildcat with 73 total tackles on defense and 14 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including five sacks.

On offense, he opened holes for the HNS running backs and quarterback Austin Sudbeck and carried the ball once in a while from a fullback position.

Krause also was a problem for opposing offenses as a defensive end where he recorded 37 tackles on the season, but was a very effective tight end on the other side of the ball, hauling in 33 passes from Sudbeck for 601 yards and six touchdowns.

Sudbeck made the Hartington-Newcastle offense go all season long. He completed 99-of-155 passes for 1,541 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 160 times for 908 yards and 15 additional scores. Overall, he covered over 2,400 yards on the field for the season.

If Sudbeck was the top option for Fuller’s offense, Heimes would have to be considered 1A.

Heimes eclipsed 1,000 yards running the ball, rushing 155 times for 1,027 yards, an average of 6.6 yards per carry and 17 touchdowns. He added 16 catches for 311 yards and four more scores.

He also was in on 42 tackles in the defensive backfield including one tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Hartington-Newcastle also had two seniors and two juniors named honorable mention for the district.

Juniors Lincoln Grutsch and Colton Cavanaugh were vital assets on the offensive and defensive lines for the ‘Cats while seniors Carter Kelly and Brayden Lammers were instrumental as tight ends and defensive ends.
