LINCOLN — Steve and Tammy Wieseler found themselves in a bit of an awkward position Saturday morning.
Steve Wiesler has guided the Wynot Lady Blue Devil girls basketball team to eight state championships and five state runner-up finishes. His wife guided the Wynot Lady Blue Devil volleyball squad to seven state tournament appearances.
They weren't setting on the bench or walking the sidelines Saturday, though.
No, on Saturday they were mere spectators., watching their son, Tristan, the Lady Devils first-year head coach, as he guided his team to the school's first ever state volleyball title.
Tears could be seen flooding down their faces as the final points went on the board to give Wynot the title.
Saturday's outcome wasn't a total suprise for the proud parents, though. They've seen this group of girls work very hard to find success. They've also watched as their son worked equally hard to make sure and help supply the girls with whatever training and advice they needed to reach their lofty goals.
Tristan Wieseler has been around volleyball and sports his entire life.
“My mom and I have bounced ideas off of each other ever since I took interest in volleyball,” said Tristan. “Dad knows the mental part of coaching, teaching kids to work together and work hard, but mom and I have always connected with volleyball.”
“He’s always had a love and passion for the game that is hard to explain. He sees things others don’t,” said Tammy Wieseler. “He loves Husker volleyball and watches any college game on TV. He always tells me and I quote: ‘You know me mom, I could talk volleyball for hours.’'
