1950: Fox opens new cafe in downtown Coleridge

Nov. 2, 1950

COLERIDGE — Coleridge has a new place of business with the opening of a cafe in the Klet building. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Fox are the new owners of the cafe.

The cafe, which will be known as Jimmie’s Cafe, opened Wednesday. Meals, lunches and short orders will be served. Mr. Fox formerly operated a cafe at Concord. The couple will have living quarters in the rear of the building.

Nov. 2, 1950

COLERIDGE — A Pearl Creek fire of unknown origin destroyed a barn and hog house on the Ralph Mingus farm Sunday afternoon.

The fire, which started in the barn, was first discovered shortly after noon. The Coleridge Fire Department was called, however, the barn was almost completely destroyed by the time the firemen were able to reach the scene.

They were also unable to save the hog house, because of a strong southerly wind. The hog house was in direct line with the barn. Some straw and grain was also lost in the fire.

Nov. 2, 1950

COLERIDGE — Robert Dirks, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Dirks, suffered severe injuries Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle hit a washout in the road and upset. The accident occurred two miles south and one mile west of Hartington. He was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City by a Hartington ambulance. He suffered a broken leg and gash over one eye. The leg was set on Tuesday and at present his condition is as well as can be expected.

Nov. 3, 1960

COLERIDGE — An employee of the Sioux Falls Roofing Co. was taken to Sioux Falls Thursday morning last week after falling through an open sky-light in the shop department of the new Coleridge Community School building under construction. He was working on the roof and placing tar paper when a sky-light was covered, unknown to him, and stepped through the paper and onto the concrete floor about 25 feet below. Both arms were broken just above the wrists and he sustained a badly bruised hip and several cuts.

COLERIDGE — Nominees for Homecoming Royalty were Bob Brockman, Robert Anderson, Gary Meier, Tom Morrison, and Ronald Leapley. Also Darlene Murkle, Betty Hinrichs, Rosalind Cass, Karen Sherer, and Diane Martensen.

Nov. 3, 1960

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Bulldogs, coming from behind, brought home a victory Friday evening after traveling to Whiting, Iowa, and downing the Whiting Warriors 26-20. The Bulldogs demonstrated their best offense of the season in the closing minutes of the contest to win.

LAUREL- In a game that was very well played by both teams, Laurel came out on top of Wayne by a score of 12 to 0. The game fattened the Bears record to six wins and two defeats.

Zimmerman and Lund did the scoring for Laurel.

LAUREL- Mel Olsen’s 20 1/8” pheasant tail feather was tops in the Advocate’s first tailfeather contest.
