1925: Shots fired at boys playing Halloween pranks

Nov. 5,1925

RANDOLPH -From McLean comes the story of a shot gun volley fired at boys who were playing Halloween pranks in that town Saturday night.

We give the story as gathered from various sources: Devern Custer, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Custer, and Hugo Albers, foster son of Carl Sheel, were dragging a wagon along the street. A little distance away lives Ben Dinsmore, who appeared on his premises as the boys were engaged in dragging the wagon, and opened fire on them. A shot gun was used and Dinsmore hit his mark.

The boys were brought to Randolph and a physician attended to their wounds, finding the shot imbedded in the muscles. The shot were not removed at this time, waiting awhile to see whether they would need to be cut out.

Custer was rather badly spattered with shot in the back of his left hand, both legs, right shoulder, both hands and one or two shot in his forehead. Albers was shot in the legs. Neither of the boys are seriously hurt, but both of them feel that the shooting was not justified. The wagon they were dragging was the property of Howard Custer, brother of Devern; the boys were not on the premises of Dinsmore nor did they have any of his property. Mr. Dinsmore, we hear, was under the impression that the boys intended to take his auto and gave this as a reason for the shooting.

The wounded boys drove to Pierce Monday and filed complaint against Dinsmore. At this hearing the stories of both sides will be heard.

It is fortunate indeed the marksman held low. A little higher aim might easily have put out the eyes of the boys and resulted in a serious predicament for the man who used deadly fire arms upon little or no provocation.

RANDOLPH - The meeting held Monday under the direction of the Izaak Walton League discussed the matter of an ice skating rink as a popular winter sport and healthful diversion for the boys and girls of Randolph.

A few years ago an ice skating rink was successful and furnished splendid recreation for our young people.

At the Monday night meeting it was deemed best not to attempt to use the swimming pool for an ice rink, one of the reasons being danger of drowning over the deep 9-foot hole in case of soft ice and the further risk of damage to the pool itself from cracking. We have a first class pool and the stockholders at the meeting were opposed to taking a chance of ruining it.

A possible location for an ice rink is the tennis court, which can be easily flooded. H. O. Peterson, always public spirited, has, we understand, given his consent to the use of this ground for such an ice rink.

A committee was appointed to take charge of the matter. The committee is: H. F. Sellon, Wm. Eike and J. J. Carroll.

About all that needs to be done now is an earth embankment along the south and east edges of the plot, then wait for the proper zero weather in which to flood the ground.
