WYNOT — As sure as we change our clocks back every fall and as sure as Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November, the Wynot Lady Blue Devils will load the Blue Devil bus and join their fans in their annual trek south to Lincoln for the State Volleyball Tournamen this week.
Wynot swept its way to the D2-3 Subdistrict title over Wausa then swept the D2-1 District championship on Nov. 1 over Paxton, both matches were played in Wynot.
“We’ve worked hard all year with this being one of our goals so it’s awesome to see it happen for our team,” said first-year head coach Tristan Wieseler. “Our girls have dedicated a lot of time to volleyball and put a lot of trust in each other to get to this point, it’s been very fun to be a part of.”
The Lady Blue Devils wasted little time in taking care of Paxton in the district finals winning 25-12, 25-6 and 25-11.
Kenna Oligmueller, who reached 1,000 career kills in the match, paced the Wynot attack with 14 kills and recorded a double-double with 14 digs.
Jordan Foxhoven slammed 11 kills and Mya Pinkelman hammered eight.
Haley Wieseler tipped up 39 set assists and recorded three blocks. Kiera Heimes rifled eight aces,Oligmueller and Jaylin Geisen each had three and Tiara Sudbeck hit two aces.
Geisen recorded 24 digs, Foxhoven added nine and Wieseler eight.
Wieseler, the coach, reminisced about growing up around the program and the transition into the head chair on the bench.
“Growing up I understood the expectations just now it’s a different role,” the coach said. “I think a lot of our success comes from past years continuing to get better and pushing each girl and building on top of successes, my classmates and friends were some of the state pioneers for Wynot volleyball and kind of got the thing started so it’s awesome to see where we are now.
“Success doesn’t just happen, it takes time and groups to push each other and I feel that’s what we have had the past 10 to 15 years at Wynot.”
In the subdistrict finals, Oligmueller again paced the attack posting 12 winners in the match as the Lady Blue Devils sent Wausa home after a 25-16, 25-19 and 25-17 sweep over the Lady Vikings.
She also recorded a double-double with 10 digs.
Wieseler had 18 assists and Geisen had three ace serves.
Geisen had 11 digs, Kiera Heimes registered 10.
Wynot will arrive in Lincoln as the No. 1 seed in Class D2. The Lady Blue Devils will take on Red Cloud at Pinnacle Bank Arena at 9 a.m. Thursday.
