Wynot advances to playoff quarterfinals

WYNOT — It took a quarter to warm up, but once the Blue Devils hit their stride, they torched Mullen.

Seven different players found the end zone and junior standout Lane Heimes scored four times as Wynot rolled past the Broncos 64-13 in Friday’s Class D2 playoff matchup.

Mullen got a kickoff return for one of their scores and a late score against the Blue Devils reserves for their other scores.

Mullen received the opening kickoff and got a first down on a roughing the kicker but the Blue Devils held after that and forced a punt.

At the 7 minute mark Wynot put the first points on the board. Lane Heimes took an option pitch around the right side and raced 26 yards for the Blue Devils first score. Devin Brummer hit Braylon Hans for the PAT and Wynot had an 8-0 lead.

Mullen answered when Alec Werner took the kickoff and bolted 75 yards with the return. The PAT kick was good making the score 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bronco defense held and Mullen moved downfield thanks to the hard running of their big fullback Tate Kvanig. The drive stalled and a 17 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Wynot’s Carter Hans.

Wynot capitalized when Devin Brummer hooked up with Lane Heimes in the left flat and he raced down the sideline for a 43 yard TD run. Brummer hit Braylon Hans for the PAT as Wynot took a 16-7 lead.

Mullen went three and out and Wynot would score quickly. Lane Heimes got his third touchdown as he weaved through the Bronco defense for a 70 yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good making the score 22-7.

Wynot would put up one more touchdown on the board in the opening half. With just 3 seconds left in the half Devin Brummer would find Kotner Koch in the corner of the endzone for a 17 yard touchdown toss. Brummer ran in the PAT as the half came to an end with Wynot leading 30-7, The third quarter would belong to the Blue Devils. Their first score of the quarter came on a 49 yard quarterback draw by Devin Brummer. Brummer also ran in the PAT giving Wynot a 37-7 lead.

Wynot’s defense continued to shut down the Bronco offense. A bad snap sailed over the Broncos punter and Lane Heimes recovered it at the Wynot 1 yard line. Wynot’s defensive tackle Parker Schmidt was put in at fullback and he bulled in from the 1 yard line for his first touchdown of the season. Brummer ran in the PAT as Wynot held a 44-7 advantage.

Wynot offense continued to roll on their next possession. A 26 yard catch and run by Carter Hans would set up Lane Heimes’ 4th touchdown, a 10 yard run up the middle. The PAT was no good making the score 50-7.

Wynot defense would get in on the scoring blitz when Carter Hans stepped in front of Bronco pass attempt and returned it 26 yard to paydirt. The PAT run was stopped as Wynot margin continued to grow to 56-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Reserves mopped up in the 4th quarter. Mullen would put together a final drive for the Broncos marching 50 yards in 7 plays. Bo Pettit connected with Cayden Hampton on a 7 yard touchdown toss. The PAT failed as the Broncos had their second score of night trailing 56-13.

Wynot got one last special teams score when Wyatt Nelson returned the kickoff 74 yard for the Blue Devils final score of the night. Alec Wiebelhaus dove in for the PAT to make the final tally 64-13.

Wynot travels to Hitchcock County Friday.
