1960: Rogers is elected Randolph Community Club President

Oct. 27, 1960

RANDOLPH - Joseph G. Rogers, Randolph lawyer, was elected president of the Randolph Community club at a regular meeting of the club held Monday evening at the Derby Cafe. Mr. Rogers succeeds Wm. C. Dowling as the club’s president.

Other officers elected were Vance Viergutz, vice president and Vernon Viergutz, treasurer. Ronnie Gates was re-elected secretary of the club.

Retiring officers of the club in addition to Mr. Dowling are Glen Stingley, vice president; and H. A. Strathman, treasurer.

State Sen. J. W. Burbach of Crofton was a guest at the meeting and discussed in detail the eight proposed constitutional amendments which will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Senator Burbach explained the amendments and also gave pros and cons on each.

Oct. 27, 1960

RANDOLPH - Work is progressing on the new home of Mr. and Mrs. George Breding in West Randolph. The home is located the first place west of the Harry Pate house.

The structure will be a two bedroom house, dimensions of which will be 28x40. The house will have an attached garage.

RANDOLPH - The Randolph Public School will be closed Thursday and Friday while members of the faculty are attending the annual teachers convention.

The District III convention will be held at Norfolk with sessions scheduled throughout the day Thursday and Friday.

Convention speakers will include Morris Barr, well-known Australian newsman; Max Lerner, famous author and educator; and Norman Cousins, editor of “The Saturday Review.”

Oct. 27, 1960

RANDOLPH — Rev. and Mrs. David Rath of Prairie du Sac, Wis., arrived Thursday for an extended stay in the home of Pastor and Mrs. David Rath. Rev. Rath will have charge of services at St. John’s Lutheran church, while his son, the pastor, attends the University of Chicago.

Pastor Rath was home from Chicago to spend the weekend with his family and parents.

Oct. 27, 1960

HARTINGTON - A Randolph youth was fined in county court here Saturday when he pleaded guilty to a charge of a minor being in possession of beer. Myron Strathman was fined $35 plus $4 costs. He was arrested Oct. 16 by a safety patrolman.

RANDOLPH — The Randolph High Cards defeated Allen 36-8 Friday evening on the Allen field. The win kept the Cardinals undefeated for the year and upped their season record to 5 wins, 0 losses and a tie.

RANDOLPH — Twenty-one members of the Randolph FHA Chapter attended the district convention held October 17 at Wakefield. Mrs. Fred Frank was the guest speaker for the convention.

RANDOLPH — The big Win-A-Car prize goes to a lucky person Saturday evening when his or her name is drawn in Randolph for a 1970 Maverick automobile.

The RHS band will be on hand under the direction of Eugene Walden, playing for the crowd at 8 p.m.
