Lady ‘Cats end season in SubDistrict tourney

EMERSON - The Hartington-Newcastle volleyball season came to an abrupt halt in a loss in the opening round of the D1-4 Subdistrict Tournament Oct. 27 with a 25-17, 25-14 and 25-10 loss to Lyons-Decatur Northeast.

Final statistics were not available at press time. A complete statistical recount of the subdistrict game will be in next week’s Cedar County News.

The Lady ‘Cats showed signs of life throughout the match but the Lady Cougars snuffed out any hope with the 25-10 third-set win.

HNS hung around early in set two and earned back-to-back points on a kill off of the LDNE block and an ace serve by Ella Eickhoff but Lyons-Decatur would rip off eight of the next nine points to take a 20-7 lead.

The lead grew to 22-8 before a Lainey Morten block made it 22-10.

A Nora Lange winner and an Eickhoff block sandwiched around a couple of Lady Cougar errors and the score was 24-14, but LDNE took the set and went up 2-0 in the match.

Things went from bad to worse in the final set and LDNE walked away with the win to advance in the tournament.

On Oct. 21 the Lady Wildcats defeated Neiligh-Oakdale in a consolation match of the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Tournament.

Hartington-Newcastle got offensive in the contest with Eickhoff leading the attack with 16 kills.

She would go on to record a double-double with 10 digs and she also successfully passed on 21 serves in serve receiving.

Vayda Lippert also recorded a double-double with 20 set assists and 15 digs and also rifled seven ace serves. Karissa Bruning had nine kills, Lange hammered eight winners in the match and Lippert slammed seven.

Justyce Sohl posted 14 digs and 21 good passes off of the Lady Warrior serve.

Eickhoff, Lange and Bruning each recorded a couple of blocks at the net.
