HARTINGTON — Each spring, the Lewis and Clark Natural Resources District distributes tree seedlings and provides planting services for windbreaks, shelterbelts, and wildlife habitat. Seedling orders are accepted now through March 31. If you are interested in a tree belt, planning assistance is available through the local Natural Resources Conservation Service offices for preparing a tree planting design that meet your conservation needs.
The cost for seedling trees, shrubs, and native plants is $35 for lots of 25 per species. A small acreage package is available, which includes 3 Blue Spruce, 2 Bur Oak, 2 Hackberry, 5 Chokeberry, 5 American Plum, and 3 Redosier Dogwood at $40 per package. Coco Tree Mats will be available again this year. They are biodegradable, easy to install, and practical for weed control around seedlings.
Order forms can be found at the LCNRD office in Hartington, NRCS offices in Cedar, Knox, or Dixon Counties, or online at lcnrd.nebraska.gov/forestry/ conservation-tree-program. Return order forms to the LCNRD office via mail, drop-off, or phone for credit card orders. Early ordering is encouraged; some species are limited.
