LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears used three sweeps over the past week including a win in the opening round of the Greater Northeast Activities Conference and a pair of regular season matchups.
LCC defeated Hartington-Newcastle Oct. 18 at home in the opening round of the GNAC Tournament 25-13, 25-18 and 2513 to advance to the semifinals. A statistical recap of the match was not available at press time.
The Lady Bears were the No. 1 seed in the tourney and were set to take on No. 4 Lutheran High Northeast in the semifinals on Oct. 21 in Laurel.
No. 2 Elkhorn Valley was to take on No. 3 West Holt in the other semifinal with the winners meeting Oct. 24 in Atkinson at West Holt with a third-place game slated for 5:30 p.m. and the championship match to follow at 7 p.m.
Earlier in the week, Laurel-Concord Coleridge got by Elgin Public/ Pope John in a best-of-five-setsmatch on Oct. 16 25-14, 25-15 and 25-14 in Laurel.
Rena Rasmussen and Tyler Recob led the Lady Bear hitting attack with 13 and 11 winners respectively.
Carlie Kvols posted a double-double with 35 set-assists and 11 digs.
Kaida Eriksen smashed eight kills and Boston Brown tacked on five and recorded eight digs.
Eriksen had 10 digs, Rasmussen and Recob had seven each.
Recob and Brown each rifled three ace serves in the match.
LCC traveled north to Hartington to take on Cedar Catholic on Oct. 14 and came away with a 27-25, 25-10 and 25-17 sweep of the Lady Trojans.
The opening set was a back-andforth battle between the two teams six ties with Recob doing the honors at the end of the set with a monster slam and a winner off of the Cedar Catholic block to break the sixth tie and get to the 27-25 final.
The Lady Bears were up 6-3 before the Lady Trojans scored the next nine points to take a 12-7 lead earlier in the set.
An LCC service error started the run then back-to-back hammers by Calley Stewart tied the score at 6-6.
Brynn Bernecker rifled two winners one deep on the line and one straight down to give the Lady Trojans their first lead of the match then an Addison Walter ace serve made it 9-6.
The Lady Bears helped out with some attack errors and when the dust settled, Cedar Catholic was in front by the 12-7 score.
The Lady Bears battled back with a Recob winner off the tape then a Kvols ace serve and the set was tied at 12-12.
The Lady Trojans made a hitting error and LCC went up by a point then a winner from Rasmussen who finished with 24 winners in the match hit a slam off the Cedar block out of bounds and the Lady Bears were up 14-13.
The teams traded service errors then a Recob winner, one of her nine in the match, put Laurel-Concord- Coleridge in front 16-14.
The Lady Bears went up 22-19 after another Rasmussen slam, but the Lady Trojans battled back to tie it up at 23-23.
After another Recob kill made it 24-24, a Brown ace gave LCC a 25-24 lead.
A Lady Bear service error tied it up for the last time at 25-25 setting up Recob’s heroics.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge jumped out to a big lead in the second set and never really looked back on the way to the 25-10 final and a 2-0 lead in the match then outlasted the Lady Trojans in set three for the 25-17 final score to record the sweep.
