2005: Leise breaks his dad’s career rushing record

Oct. 12, 2005

HARTINGTON — Preston Leise believes in keeping things in the family.

Cedar Catholic’s senior running back set a new school record and attained a lifetime goal Friday night.

The four-year starter broke the school record for most career rushing yards. The 29- year-old record of 2,843 yards was set by his father, Jeff Leise, during his varsity football career from 1974-76.

Preston has at least two more games to add to his 3,012 career rushing yards.

The event was a special moment for his entire family as the ball was presented to Jeff and hugs were handed out all around.

This is the second family member Preston has knocked from the record books. His older brother, Derrick, held the record for most touchdowns in one game, but Preston wiped that one off the books in last year’s win over Lutheran High Northeast.

Jeff Leise couldn’t have been happier to see the record fall. “I’m very proud of him.” Jeff said. “He’s very hard working and very goal oriented. He sets some tough goals for himself and works hard to reach those goals.”

Preston was also happy to reach the mark, but knows he still has several goals to reach this season.

“It’s been one of my goals for a long time. I’m glad I was able to get it done,” he said. “We’ve got some more things to do yet this season, though.”
