HARTINGTON—A campaign that urges residents to take advantage of a state law easing the restrictions of absentee ballots is paying off in Cedar County. Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling said requests for absentee ballots are on the rise for the upcoming election.

HARTINGTON—There will be a flock of Husker fans migrating to Lincoln to be a part of Senior Day honoring University of Nebraska football player Russ Hochstein. Hochstein played his high school football games for Cedar Catholic High School.

HARTINGTON—Goetz Street landowners expressed their concern to the City Council about the high price tag attached to a street paving project here.
The paving project, from Franklin Avenue to Summit Avenue, began last spring and was completed in mid-summer at a cost of $200,135.

HARTINGTON — A year of accumulated leadership and achievement resulted in the top two awards presented at the annual Cedar County 4-H Recognition Program Sunday night.
Mikayla Meier, Hartington, was named the recipient of the 2005 4-H Outstanding Achievement Award. Tyson Fiscus is the recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Service Award.
Meier’s achievements not only involved 4-H, but included her school and the community.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Public School Board has a difficult decision ahead of them. According to rules set by the Nebraska School Activities Association. Hartington Public may have to go to 11-man football for the next two years.
A report filed with the NSAA shows Hartington has 88 students in the ninth through eleventh grades.

BOW VALLEY — Cedar County may have its first confirmed case of West Nile virus.
Kathy Jackson, Bow Valley, said she felt sick for about two weeks before going to the hospital emergency room.
“I had flu like symptoms — stomach felt cruddy, ached everywhere, headaches, vomited,” said Jackson. “The headaches got worse.”
It was the ringing in her ears that sent Jackson to the emergency room. The doctor on duty in the emergency room started her on medication and sent her home.

OSMOND — The Hartington Wildcats dropped a close 14-0 District contest to the Osmond Tigers Friday.
The loss drops Coach Tim Koehler’s team to 1-6 on the year with one game left on the season. Hartington finishes out the year this week at Winside.
