LAUREL - The Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcat volleyball team dropped the first two matches in the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Tournament on Oct. 18 with a first-round loss to Laurel-Concord- Coleridge and a consolation bracket loss to Plainview to end up in a seventh-place contest which was set for Oct. 21 in Plainview and was against Neligh-Oakdale.
In the match with the Lady Pirates, after dropping the first set 25-11, the Lady Wildcats got some things going in sets two and three before falling 25-21 and 25-20.
Ella Eickhoff had the hot hand in the match smashing eight kills, Karissa Bruning recorded five and Vayda Lippert hit three winners.
Eickhoff, Lainey Morten, Lippert, Haydin Marksmeier and Bruning each had an ace serve and Marksmeier and Morten had nine and four set assists respectively.
Lippert recorded 14 digs, Justyce Sohl posted a dozen, Eickhoff had 12 and Nora Lange had 10.
In the opening round of the GNAC, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge lived up to its top seeding in the tournament with a 25-13, 25-18 and 25-13 win in the match.
Eickhoff again paced the Lady Wildcat attack with eight winners, Bruning recorded four and Lippert smacked two.
Morten tipped up 13 set assists and Lippert started the offense with 16 successful passes, Hadley Grutsch recorded 10.
Next action for the Lady ‘Cats will be the D1-4 Subdistrict Tournament on Oct. 27 and Oct. 28.
Joining Hartington-Newcastle in the tournament will be Bancroft-Rosalie, Cedar Catholic, Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Tri County Northeast.
The site and bracket for the tournament have not been released.
