NORFOLK — A lot will be on the line Friday night when Cedar Catholic travels to Norfolk to take on the two-time defending state champion Knights.
The game will feature the top two rated teams in Class C2 this year and the only two teams to earn the top spot this season.
The contest will also decide the District C2-3 champ as neither team has faced defeat in the District this season.
The game will also be a huge determining factor in the playoff seeding process. Currently, Cedar Catholic would be the top seed in the field, based on its NSAA Power Points ranking. Norfolk Catholic is currently ranked second in power points.
These two teams have squared off against each other 34 times since the series first started in 1963. The Trojans have only won six of those contests.
The last time Cedar defeated the Knights was in 2019. That victory ended a 24-year drought for the Trojans. Prior to that, Cedar earned a 20-13 victory against the Knights in 1995.
This year’s Cedar Catholic team features something only a dozen other teams have had here — a defense that rarely allows the opposing team to score.
Cedar has only given up 54 points on the season and tossed two shutouts — three if you count the
1-0 forfeit win over Oakland-Craig.
The school record for fewest points allowed belongs to the 1959 Holy Trinity team. That squad only allowed 24 points all season long, tossing five shut outs on the season. The squad’s only loss that season was a 12-6 loss to Crofton.
