ALBION - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan volleyball team halted a fivegame losing skid with a hard-fought thrilling win over the Boone Central Lady Cardinals 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 17-25 and 15-13 win on Oct. 16 in a match played in Albion before opening action in the Mid State Conference Tournament Oct. 20.
Earlier in the week, Laurel-Concord- Coleridge came to Hartington and swept the Lady Trojans 27-25, 25-10 and 25-17.
The Lady Trojans came out strong against Boone Central winning the first two sets before losing momentum and dropping sets three and four causing a final sprint to 15 to determine the winner of the match.
Anisten Wortmann had a great night, particularly in the back row where she posted 21 digs and 38 successful passes in serve receiving. She also put down seven winners in the front row and had a couple of rejections at the net.
Brynn Bernecker recorded a double-double with 11 winners and a dozen digs, Reese Albers had 13 digs and 16 good passes.
Autumn Kathol also posted a double-double with 12 digs and 16 set assists.
Calley Stewart led the Cedar attack with 15 kills, Savannah Pick and Ava Stewart had six slams each. Kally Becker just missed a double-double with 22 assists and nine digs. Becker also rifled a couple of ace serves and Wortmann had one. The Lady Trojans stayed with Laurel-Concord- Coleridge through the first set but lost momentum and dropped the match in straight sets 27-25, 25-10 and 25-17. The opening set was a backand- forth battle between the two teams six ties with Tyler Recob doing the honors at the end of the set with a monster slam and a winner off of the Cedar Catholic block to break the sixth tie and get to the 27-25 final.
The Lady Bears were up 6-3 before the Lady Trojans scored the next nine points to take a 12-7 lead earlier in the set.
An LCC service error started the run then back-to-back hammers by Calley Stewart tied the score at 6-6.
Bernecker rifled two winners one deep on the line and one straight down to give the Lady Trojans their first lead of the match then a Walter ace serve made it 9-6.
The Lady Bears helped out with some attack errors and when the dust settled, Cedar Catholic was in front by the 12-7 score.
The Lady Bears battled back with a Recob winner off the tape then a Carlie Kvols ace serve and the set was tied at 12-12.
The Lady Trojans made a hitting error and LCC went up by a point then a winner from Rasmussen who finished with 24 winners in the match hit a slam off the Cedar block out of bounds and the Lady Bears were up 14-13.
The teams traded service errors then a Recob winner, one of her nine in the match, put Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in front 16-14.
The Lady Bears went up 22-19 after another Rasmussen slam, but the Lady Trojans battled back to tie it up at 23-23.
A kill by Pick made and winner from Bernecker with her left hand cross court made it 22-21 and eventually, back-to-back errors by LCC evened the set.
After another Recob kill made it 24-24, a Brown ace gave LCC a 25-24 lead.
A Lady Bear service error tied it up for the last time 25-25.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge jumped out to a big lead in the second set and never really looked back on the way to the 25-10 final and a 2-0 lead in the match then outlasted the Lady Trojans in set three for the 25-17 final score to record the sweep.
Walter led the Cedar Catholic attack with six winners, Calley Stewart had five while Pick and Bernecker each had four.
Jocelyn Bottolfsen recorded nine digs and Becker had 13 set assists.
Cedar Catholic was ready to take on Pierce in the opening round of the Mid State Conference Tournament in a match played at Norfolk Catholic on Oct. 20.
Winners on Oct. 20 will move on to Battle Creek on Oct. 21 the consolation bracket will be played at Norfolk Catholic on Oct. 21.
