Lady Cardinals have busy week on the volleyball court

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Lady Cardinal volleyball team had a very busy week all on the road this past week which saw the young team drop a regular season match on Oct. 9 and three straight matches in the Stanton quadrangular on Oct. 11.

In the Stanton Quad, Randolph was defeated by Plainview 25-21 and 25-16 in the Lady Cards’ last match of the day.

Abbey Backer led a balanced Lady Redbird attack with four kills, Mabel Ngebeh and Brooke Meier each had three and Jenna Guenther nailed a couple of winners.

Meier had a couple of ace serves and seven set assists, Backhaus also had a pair of aces and added eight digs and 13 successful serve receives in the match.

In the loss to Bancroft-Rosalie, the Lady Panthers defeated Randolph 26-24 and 25-19.

The Lady Cardinals took B-R to the limit in the opening race to 25 before falling by the 26-24 final score and the Lady Panthers secured the sweep with the 25-29 final in the second set.

Alaina Schulz and Backer led the offense with three kills each; Ngebeh, Sydney Robinson and Guenther added two apiece while Lilly Kuchta and Meier each slammed one.

Kuchta and Delayne Thelen had a couple of ace serves and Backhaus bumped up a dozen successful serves to set up the Randolph offense. Meier tipped up 13 assists.

In the loss to Stanton, the Lady Mustangs kept it brief, downing the Lady Cards 25-6 and 25-11.

In the regular season loss to Bloomfield, Randolph fell 25-15, 2519 and 25-18 in the best-of-five-sets match.

Schulz and Robinson had three winners each, while Ngebeh and Backer had two.

Meier and Thelen each had an ace serve and Meier recorded 10 assists.

Backhaus had 12 digs defensively and added 23 successful passes in serve receiving. Thelen had 11 good passes and Kuchta moved along 10.

“This season has kind of been ups and downs because of injury and rotation changes,” said Lady Cardinal senior Ngebeh. “We have fought a lot harder and we have finished better. I also feel like we are closer as teammates and have a lot more energy.”

Randolph was set to take on Plainview and Wynot in a triangular on Oct. 14 in Wynot before heading off to another triangular on Oct. 16 hosted by Boyd County and including Osmond.

The Lewis & Clark Conference Tournament opens action on Oct. 18 and runs through Oct. 21.

The Lady Cardinals took part in a Pink Out game recently. The Randolph girls have had a very busy couple of weeks on the court, playing in a quardrangular at Stanton and a triangular at Creighton.
