HARTINGTON — Area soldiers who are part of the 189th National Guard Unit are headed home to see family this week before being deployed to Iraq.
Several area men will soon be on active duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and be away from their families for over a year.
The unit left Aug. 17 for Fort Riley where they have been training for the work they will be doing in Iraq.
Leander and Lois Lammers of Hartington have two sons who will return to Nebraska with the unit. They have been keeping in touch with their sons by cell phone and e-mail. Greg, who has been in the National Guard for 17 years, is married and lives in Norfolk. His younger brother Chris has been with the Guard for three years.

COLERIDGE — A musicallyinspired Cinderella story has put one Cedar County school on the national map.
After nearly a decade of championship marching band competitions, the Coleridge Bulldogs marching band has been awarded state recognition for its efforts. The marching band was recently invited to represent the state at the 2006 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
A spokesperson from Music Celebrations said the Bulldog Marching Band was selected on recommendations of state music officials, past
achievements and superior ratings.

HARTINGTON — If the figures add up, Hartington could have a drive-in movie theatre in the near future.
LEAP II (Leaders Energizing Activities in Partnership) is exploring the possibilities of starting a small business in Hartington. The local youth group will soon be gathering information from surveys that had been made available to Hartington area residents at the end of September.

HARTINGTON — Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling outlined deadlines regarding voter registration and early voting for the Nov. 2 Nebraska general election.
Early voting for the election started Sept. 27 by mail or in person at county election offices. Any registered voter can cast an early-voting ballot. The applications for the early ballot can be found inside this week’s Cedar County News.

HARTINGTON — The Cedar County Historical Society is stretching its arms out to bring in innovative ideas on sharing the history that is kept at the County Museum in Hartington.
A business class at Wayne State is stepping in to help out with a plan to promote and help support the museum.

HARTINGTON — Hartington Public School will be using the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) tests for the 2010-11 school year.
At the Sept. 20 Hartington School Board meeting Principal Russell Flamig told board members the yearly testing will start in November.
“We will use the test for the fourth through eighth grades first – we will be doing more grades later on,” Flamig said. “Tests will be done twice, maybe three times this year.”
