Wildcats get back to their winning ways

SPENCER - In a game that finished looking a lot closer than it actually was, the Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats broke a twogame skid with a convincing 46-36 win over Boyd County Friday.

Three fourth-quarter touchdowns by the Spartans made the game appear a lot closer than it actually was — especially considering Boyd County scored on the last play of the game to get to within 10 points.

The ‘Cats were hitting on all cylinders to open the contest and sprinted out to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter and 32-6 advantage by the halftime huddle.

Brayden Lammers scored the first of his two touchdowns to open the scoring on the night when he hauled in a 12-yard pass from Austin Sudbeck and after the two repeated the connection on the point after try the HNS lead was 8-0.

Back-to-back rushing touchdowns by Jason Heimes, two of his four in the game, made it 24-0 early in the second frame.

Heimes’ first score late in the first was from four yards out and his second was from the 12 early in the second quarter.

The Spartans scored with 57 seconds left before the break, but the Wildcats would answer before the half ended.

Sudbeck and Lammers hooked up from six yards out with 16 seconds left and after a Sudbeck run for the conversion, the ‘Cats were up, by the 32-6 score.

Boyd County scored on a long run early in the third period but a Heimes touchdown in the third and one in the fourth made the score a pretty comfortable, 46-14.

Sudbeck had another efficient night under center, completing 15-of-20 passes for 146 yards and the two touchdown heaves to Lammers. Kane Gratzfeld padded the passing yardage completing one pass, the only one he threw, for 43 yards.

Heimes had a good night on the ground churning out 89 yards on his 20 touches which included the four scores and Sudbeck broke the century-mark on the ground with 109 yards on his 19 carries.

Lammers pulled down six Sudbeck tosses for 45 yards and the scores while Mason Krause hauled in five for 121 yards on the night.

Ty Opfer had a great game on the other side of the ball with 14 tackles , Lammers added 10 and Ashton Wakeley had eight stops including a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery.

Hartington-Newcastle is set to end the regular season at home in a battle with Bloomfield Oct. 16.
