Pirates swamp Bears on Homecoming night

LAUREL - The Plainview Pirates came to town Oct.

3 for a district, regular season contest and sailed away with a 63-12 win over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge to improve to 5-1 and drop the Bears to 2-4.

Plainview sprinted to a 21-0 lead at the end of the opening 12 minutes and if not for a Kolten Settje 15-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the second frame, the Bears were scoreless until Paxton Hoeppner found Drey Puppe for a 56-yard score towards the end of the third quarter after the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt.

Meanwhile, the Pirates added 21 points in the second quarter and 14 in the third to head to the final period with the Bears trailing 56-12.

Plainview scored a meaningless touchdown in the fourth to get to the 63-12 final score.

The Pirates racked up 505 yards in the contest, accounting for 228 yards through the air and 277 on the ground.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge ran for just 34 yards and passed for 127.

Paxton Hoeppner finished the night with eight tackles, Settje recorded six stops and had the interception return for the touchdown and Kyle Rasmussen had a tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Talon Carson also picked off a Pirate pass and was in on four tackles.

The Bears will be back in action Oct. 10 when they host another home game, this one with 4-2 Summerland which is coming off of a 49-12 win over Lutheran High Northeast.
