1950: Oxley and Stone are crowned as Homecoming king, queen

COLERIDGE — Ideal fall weather was in effect this week as farmers wondered how long it would be before they could get into cornfields. Damage done by the frost is varied with late corn being hit the hardest.

The Nebraska crop report states this week that corn harvest should be later than usual due to the fact that cobs and stalks contain more than the usual amount of moisture.

COLERIDGE — The Hillside schoolroom has been redecorated in the October fall colors. A new oil burner was installed in the schoolroom recently. Eldon Kuhl treated the teacher and pupils last week in honor of his birthday. Miss Elizabeth Wilcox is the teacher.

LAUREL- A record crowd attended the Laurel American Legion’s first trap shoot of the season Sunday afternoon to sharpen their aim for the extra long duck and pheasant season that opens soon. According to Postmaster George O’Gara, there were 108 duck stamps sold here last year. He expects it to increase this year.

LAUREL- A.B. Chederquist, manager of the Holmquist Grain and Lumber Company here, announced the first of the week that he will have a grand opening of their new office building and scale October 19.

LAUREL- Gerald T. Bergan, Archbishop of Omaha, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 40 children and eight adults at St.

Mary’s Catholic Church from the Laurel and Tara Hill churches.

Oct. 13, 1960

LAUREL- Laurel fans were all smiles Friday night when a successful homecoming football game, crowning of the king and queen, and a dance were held. They defeated Holy Trinity 33 to 0.

Gary Oxley and Nancy Stone were crowned king and queen. The other candidates were Mike Munter, Curt Van Fossen and Jim Lund for king; Marilyn Zeurcher, Sheryl Wiebelhaus and Linda Haisch for queen. Janice Rastede and Steve Schutte are attendants and crownbearers are Greg Blatchford and Susan Purcell.

LAUREL- An appreciation dinner for those who donated to the VFW building fund was held Saturday night with 65 attending.

D.W. Curtiss was toastmaster and entertainment was provided by the Lester Smith children.

COLERIDGE — The swimming pool fund took another jump this week as the Nightingale Extension Club donated $5. A $10 donation, which was never acknowledged, was discovered this week and was donated by the Dryland Daisies in September 1958. With both donations, the fund now stands at $1,800.

COLERIDGE —A plane piloted by Len Kurtzhals and carrying Claude Frerichs and Eddie Koudele flew in the Coleridge vicinity Sunday and Mr. Frerichs said crops looked in very good condition throughout the area.

Oct. 15, 1970

COLERIDGE — Coleridge area residents woke up Friday morning to find the winter season paying an early call. At least six inches of snow fell before Friday noon.
