1920: Laurel businessman marks 50 years in opertion

LAUREL- Laurel and Belden census for the years 1900, 1910 and 1920 were received from the Census Bureau in Washington. Laurel’s was 1900, 514; 1910, 514 and 1920, 839.

Belden’s was 1900, 197; 1910, 247 and 1920, 285.

LAUREL- Monday marked the 50th anniversary of C.S. Ford’s entry into business. Oct. 11, 1870, he established a grocery store at a point about three miles from the present town of Homer, where the post office of Lodi was established a little later and where a mill and other small industries were already doing business. Leaving Homer 20 years ago this past spring, Mr. and Mrs.

Ford came to Laurel and established the grocery store which they have since operated. There were married in Sept. 1872--48 years ago.

Oct. 13, 1920 LAUREL- Guy R. Stewart, who since he sold the Variety Store a few weeks ago, has been rather unsettled, has been working with J.H.

Artman at the plumbing trade.

LAUREL- Rev. L.A. Laursen and Soren Norby left for Kansas City, being delegates to the Nebraska District Convention of the Lutheran Church.

Oct. 16, 1940

LAUREL- Joe Artman of Laurel, veteran of the Masonic order, was honored at the Masonic Hall with 81 brother members from 13 lodges of surrounding towns paying tribute to him upon his 50th year of membership in the lodge.

LAUREL- Fifteen Laurel students are attending Wayne State College. They are Phyllis Anderson, Philip Bass, George Berglund, Irene Berglund, Charles Curtis, Claude Lukes, Ramona Maxon, Dorothy Moore, Jack O’Gara, Vera Paulsen, Wesley Poe, Nelly Urwiler, Evonne Wallin, Donna Wickett and Keith Wickett.

LAUREL- A group of Laurel boys and others are expected here next weekend to hunt pheasants.

Among them will be Neal Felber and William Day from Lincoln, the two Stage boys, Bill Fahnestock and Clarence Johnson.

LAUREL- Word has been received here that Don Rimel is in the South Sea Islands at the present time on a cruise, while Harry Earl is on a Coast Guard cutter off the Honolulu coast. They often visit with Laurel boys there, namely Verle Olmstead, Harold Anderson, Hoogner Lindquist and they are expecting to see LaVerle Hellwig, who will arrive there soon.
