RANDOLPH - The Cards broke into the victory column in conference competition Friday as they bounced Hartington 25-0 at Hartington, scoring three touchdowns in the last half.

The Cards gave the Wildcats a chance, and the only time the foe penetrated Randolph territory was in the second quarter, when the Wildcats moved to the 15-yard mark with the aid of a 15yard penalty against Randolph.

Hartington’s offense was weak and the Cards had 13 first downs to four for Hartington, and the Cards net yardage by rushing was nearly six times that of Hartington.

The Cards started fast, grabbing the ball on a Hartington fumble on Hartington’s 20, the Cards struck in four plays to score as Bernet plunged over from the three-yard stripe. The Cards sent Lewis on a quick opener for the extra point.

Early in the third quarter, the Cards started a drive, and from the Hartington 20 Schenck found a big hole and scurried through to score. Taking over the ball on the Hartington 35 after a blocked Hartington punt, the Cards wasted no time and several plays were rocking at the goal line. Bernet plunged for the touchdown from the four. Randolph recovered a Hartington fumble on the Wildcats’ 43 and a Schenck to Krueper pass was good for 28 yards and set up the last touchdown. Bernet plunged in on an off-tackle play from the 5. Wurdinger’s interception ended Hartington night.

Coach Norvell swept the bench as every man in suit got to play.

Stand outs for Randolph were E. Kruger and E. Wurdinger at end, while Schenck made lengthy yardage for the Cards, and Bernet’s line plunging looked good as he tallied three touchdowns. Jerald Scott’s play at defensive tackle was good, and a bright spot for the Cards was the play of Brodersen, a substitute tackle.

RANDOLPH - A grotto built around the central figure of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, has recently been completed on the grounds of St. Frances church as a major project in the beautification of the church and rectory grounds, which will be extensively landscaped next year.

The grotto, located between the rectory and the church is on a plot which lends itself as an ideal location for such an edifice, as it is in a garden setting, complete with trees, flower beds, and shrubs.

Brother Egbert Backer, O. S. B. of Schuyler built the grotto. Brother Egbert, who has made a hobby of building grottos, built the grotto during his vacation this summer. He has built several in this section of the state, and takes his vacation working at this sort of project.

The grotto is constructed of stone from Tabor, S.D. and from a stone quarry west of Hartington. Featured among the stones used in the construction, however, are stones brought by members of the parish.

These stones were collected on vacation trips to different places in the United States, both near and far from here. The grotto bears the inscription Holy Year, 1950.

At the base of the grotto is a fish pond, and flanking the grotto which faces west, are two large flower pots. The statue, which is four and a half feet high, is surrounded by an arch with nine lights, to light the grotto.

The grotto is an added feature to a building program which has been underway at St. Frances church. The building program includes a new rectory, a large two-story residence was moved to the site a year ago to give the parish one of the most modern and spacious priest’s residences in this part of the state. The old rectory was dismantled. Also finished this year was the brick addition to the parish school, and this completely modernized the school. St. Frances parish now has one of the most extensive establishments in this section of the state with its church, rectory and school.
