HARTINGTON - The Cedar County News was sold last week by Editor E. B. Hirschman and the new editor and publisher, J. P. O’Furey, took possession of the newspaper and printing plant last Monday.
Mr. Hirschman was county treasurer for five years, retiring last January, at which time he purchased the News. He is disposing of the property on account of his eyes, and will devote the coming months to their treatment.
A very flattering notice from the pen of Mr. Hirschman, introducing the incoming editor appears in another column.
Mr. O’Furey is temporarily making his headquarters at the Grand Hotel until a suitable house can be secured, when he will at once bring his family, consisting of Mrs. O’Furey and two children, Geraldine Elsa, age 9, and Joseph Daniel, age 7, to Hartington and make this their permanent home.
The change of ownership and the necessity for the incoming editor to get acquainted with numerous details of the office, the advertisers and the sources of news in the few days which have elapsed since he took charge, will naturally result in some omissions, and possibly some errors. If any of such should occur your kindly consideration would be appreciated.
In order to make the Cedar County News all that it is desired it is necessary to get all the news, and readers and friends of the paper can show their friendship in no better way than by calling the attention of the News force to such matters of interest or general news which may come under their observation.
Mr. O’Furey will attend the Northeast Nebraska Editorial convention at Norfolk Friday and Saturday, spend Sunday with his family in Sioux City, and return Monday, after which his time and ability will be at the service of the community.
Mr. O’Furey is a brother of Frank M. O’Furey, publisher of the Mapleton, Iowa, Press, and one of the well known editors of Northwestern Iowa.
