RANDOLPH - Russ Whitmore, chief of police in Randolph, participated in a high speed chase early Monday that started in Randolph and ended up with a young Illinois man in the Pierce County Jail.

According to Whitmore, about midnight Sunday a 1977 Trans Am was observed in Randolph, when he attempted to stop the vehicle for a minor traffic violation. The car, bearing Illinois license plates, fled west on Highway 20 with the Randolph police chief in pursuit. A radio check with the Nebraska Highway Patrol revealed the car was reported stolen from Illinois.

The Osmond Police Department set up a road block which the fleeing car broke through and proceeded west toward Plainview when another road block was avoided by leaving the road and going around. The police officer at Plainview fired three shots at the fleeing Trans Am hitting the radiator. At the junction of Highways 20 & 14 west of Plainview the driver was apprehended and taken into custody and jailed at Pierce.

A check with the Pierce County Sheriff’s office on Monday afternoon revealed that William D. Gray, 20, was being held in connection with the incident with a charge of theft of a motor vehicle either being filed or expected to be filed.

During the chase, according to Whitmore, speeds reached 115 miles per hour with the following law enforcement officials involved: two Nebraska State troopers, two Antelope County Sheriff law officers, the Osmond Police Department, the Plainview Police Department, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
