RANDOLPH - Three college upsets Saturday made for a difficult week in the Times Football Contest.

Combining the upsets with a lackluster performance bytheNebraskaCornhuskerdefensiveunit against Missouri, only one entrant came close to guessing the game’s total offensive output.

Out of 61 entries, Ken Dunker of Wayne tabbed 10 correct guesses including Mississippi State’s thumping of the Florida Gators.

He picks up $10 as this week’s winner.

RANDOLPH — A number of utility poles in downtown Randolph show the spirit of the season as Karen Andrew and Peggy Leiting of the Randolph Area Venture’s Downtown Improvement Committee decorated shocks around the base of the poles.

In the near future, downtown welcome banners will also be attached to the poles.

RANDOLPH -Randolph improved to 4-1 on the season as a strong defensive performance shut down the Ponca Indians 12-0 Friday. The Cardinals held the home team’s offensive output to 75 yards in the shutout victory.

Several costly mistakes at key moments near the Ponca goal line hurt the Cardinals, who will be on the road again this week to take on Wakefield.

Kyle Gubbels, who rushed for 92 yards on 16 carries, paced Randolph’s offensive efforts on the night.

RANDOLPH — Randolph Men’s Golf League had their playoff on Sept. 16. RANDOLPH—ThefaceofdowntownRandolph underwent a huge facelift Oct. 2-3.

Larry and Jane Janssen of Janssen Construction completed the demolition of a dilapidated downtown building.

Due to years of abandonment, the building needed to be demolished. Janssen Construction started Saturday by slowly collapsing the back half of the building and finishing demolition of the front portion of the building on Sunday.

Residents spent Saturday and Sunday afternoon watching the building slowly disappear into a pile of brick and rubble.

The building first served as Boughn’s Big Store. Through the years it has been known by many names: GrieselImplement,MahoneyImplement, John Deere-Robert Miller, Anderson Plumbing and Electric, Anderson & Roberts, the Pool Hall, Kiddie Korner Pre-School, and a Laundromat.

The last occupant of the building was Douglas Wire Craft.

RANDOLPH — The relatives of four Civil War veterans buried in the Randolph Cemetery got their chance Saturday to tell their stories.

A special ceremony honoring the last Civil War soldier of Cedar County was conducted by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to honor Edward Leicy, who died June 5, 1939 at a rural Randolph farm.

Leicy’s relatives and the relatives of Civil War veterans Frederick Weber, NH Dowling and John McClain, all long-time citizens of Randolph, were on hand to talk about their ancestors.
