Cardinal football team gets offensive, but falls to B-R

BANCROFT - Randolph scored a bunch of points on both sides of the football Sept. 26 but it was Bancroft-Rosalie that came away with an 82-42 win to send the Cards back home with an 0-5 record while the Panthers improved to 4-1.

“It was a high scoring game,” said Redbird coach, Mark Lech. “We ended up on the short end of the scoreboard, but it wasn’t due to lack of effort.”

The Panthers scored a couple of touchdowns and went up 16-0 before the Cardinals and Ryan Engel got things going in the first quarter with a 6-yard dash to the end zone.

Jaylen Junck did the honors on the next Randolph possession with a 10-yard scoring run then ran in the conversion and the Cards were within two, 16-14.

Bancroft added a touchdown before the end of the opening 12 minutes and the teams headed to the second quarter with the Panthers up 24-14.

“Our defense just couldn’t keep them from scoring,” Lech said. “Overall we played a good game with contributions from a lot of players, we just couldn’t stop the big explosive plays from Bancroft-Rosalie.”

The Panthers scored twice to open the second quarter before Randolph got back on the board with Engel hauling in a Jaylen Junck aerial for touchdown then after a BR score, Engel took off on a 75-yard kickoff return for a score still in the second period.

The Panthers punched in one more touchdown before the halftime huddle and the teams went to the break with the Cards trailing 54-28.

The Redbird defense scored to open the second half when Eli Bermel scooped up a Bancroft-Rosalie fumble and raced 30 yards for a score to narrow the gap to 54-34, but back-to-back scores from the Panthers to end the third made it 68-34 heading into the final frame.

Engel scored his fourth touchdown of the night, this one on a 13-yard run to paydirt, but that run was sandwiched between a couple of Panther scores and the final was set at 82-42.

Junck finished the game 5-for-12 passing the ball with the one touchdown to Engel and ran the ball for 86 yards on his 19 carries and a score. Engel finished with 38 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns.

Engel also hauled in three passes for another 43 yards and a score, Luke Harder and Bentley Reimers grabbed two passes each for 11 yards apiece.

Engel and Cole Jensen paced the Randolph defense with 13 tackles each, Tate Brodersen and Bermel each had a dozen stops with Bermel recording the fumble recovery and return for the touchdown.

The Cardinals are set to host Lyons-Decatur Northeast on Oct. 3. The Cougars will bring a 2-3 record into the game.
