Laurel businessman gets involved with the State Historical Society

Oct. 4, 1950

LAUREL - Reconstruction of State Highway No. 9 between Wakefield and Allen is among the projects to be included in a letting Oct. 26.

The State Highway Department is requesting bids for grading and culvert work on the 11 miles of highway and gravel surfacing of the detour road which is two miles east of the highway.

The work will begin at the intersection with State Highway No. 35 to Wayne and will proceed north through Wakefield and Allen.

The reconstructed highway will follow the present route except that the two right angle turns in the highway about four miles south of Allen will be replaced by curves each 3,000 feet long. Cutting down the hills and building the grade of the highway will require the excavation of about 303 thousand cubic yards of earth.

Four concrete box culverts and 40 metal culverts will be constructed to provide adequate drainage for the roadbed. The 20-foot long bridge just north of the intersection with the highway to Emerson will be replaced with a concrete box culvert as will the two 30-foot long bridges about a mile and two miles south of Allen. Six of the present culverts beneath the highway will be made longer.

LAUREL - What was feared to be a severe test of the Bears turned out into a complete rout as Laurel rolled over Plainview 48 to 13 Friday.

Laurel drew first blood on a 28 yard run by John Schroeder early in the first quarter.

Plainview came back to score and the first period ended up knotted at 7 all.

In the second quarter Laurel fans were put to the test keeping up with the fast scoring Bears as the scoreboard was not in operation; the field was so poorly marked the “chain gang” did workhorse duty.

The play that broke the tie and proved to be the undoing of the Plainview club was a pass interception by Schroeder who scampered 35 yards to paydirt.

The Bears scored three more times in this period as Plainview’s defense was like a sieve and Laurel capitalized on every mistake.

A pass from Dave Bingham to Leonard Jones covered 36 yards for a TD; Jim Pedersen recovered a fumble and scored from 28 yards out, and Schroeder crossed the goal line a second time from 28 yards.

When the half ended the Bears had a fat 34 to 7 lead and had the Plainview team wondering “wha hoppen?”
